We’re on the Charlotte Harbor side of uninhabited Cayo Costa Island – or what I would often call, “Hog Island” because of the wild hogs that run amok there. In the muck.
Merriam Webster describes a spot like this as a wash.
“A piece of ground washed by a sea or river”.
This is an incredibly magical place. I’ve camped on the tiny, tiny shoals, a half-mile out into eerily quite Gulf of Mexico from this very spot. These baron sand bars, only accessible by boat, aren’t any bigger than an, oddly-shaped tennis court. Often gone with the next storm. An invigorating placed to raise a tent for a weekend.
On certain full moons, one can bathe at night in the incredible, natural bioluminescence of The Gulf of Mexico. It’s like having your entire body immersed in bright green, living, neon energy. If you’ve ever experienced a bioluminescent event, you know that it’s nearly impossible to describe. Equally impossible to forget. Imagine swimming in total blackness, in the warm, dead-still waters of The Gulf of Mexico at midnight during a full moon. Surrounded by what seems to be, a billion under-water fire-flies surrounding, encircling and caressing your entire body. Becoming more illuminated with your slightest move.
Breathtaking. Thank you, Universe.
