Taking the stairs home,
she could see the street lamps amber glow.

And through the window by her bed
she left her loneliness down below.

“On a quiet day”, she thought,
“I can hear the surf from my place.
And on a clear morning,
I wake with sunshine on my face.”

But on this night,
she heard couples laughing on the square.
Does anyone even realize that she’s there?

She longed for the stories that they told.
Jealous of all the memories that they hold.

The ocean air pulled through her room again.
Like warm, saline reminders.

She studied the lines on her hands.
Again.
